Design Rationale

Design Rationale

Problem-Solving Approach: Addressing 60% Abandonment

The core abandonment drivers are: distrust, complexity, and unclear value. This redesign tackles each:

Front-load value: Product education happens before login (Screen 1), not after verification. Users understand what they are investing in before committing identity data.

Reduce cognitive load: From 9 steps to 6 core steps. Email verification backgrounded. Address collection deferred to onboarding 2.0 or account settings.

Real-time feedback: BVN verification now has animated progress (was a silent wait). Users see Checking, Validating, Confirmed,; reducing anxiety and app-closure.

Trust-building copy: Every screen includes reassurance , We never share your email,Verified by CBN,Most verified in 2 mins.

Key Design Decisions

1. Product Education Before Identity Verification

  • Why: Users are more willing to share personal data if they understand why and what they are investing in. Showing product benefits first creates buy-in.

  • Trade-off: More initial screens, but higher intent user base (self-selection).

2. Animated Progress During BVN Verification

  • Why: Silent waits cause users to think the app is broken and close it. Animation + status text (Checking BVN...) signals progress and reduces drop-off mid-process.

  • Expected impact: 15% reduction in mid-verification abandonment.

3. Lightweight KYC (Name + Phone Only, Address Deferred)

  • Why: BVN lookup already returns address. Asking twice feels redundant and increases friction. Move full KYC to post-investment account settings.

  • Trade-off: Regulatory compliance requires full KYC, but it can happen after trust is built.

Compliance & UX Balance
Fintech in Nigeria must comply with CBN Know-Your-Customer (KYC) regulations. This design complies without overwhelming users:

  • BVN verification satisfies identity requirements (CBN tier-1 compliant).

  • Full address collection deferred but gated: Users cannot deposit beyond 500K without completing full KYC.

  • Terms acceptance: Simplified (1 screen) rather than 5-page legal document. Links to detailed T&Cs for compliance audit.

Trust & Security Design
Visual trust signals:

  • Padlock icon next to Secured by [Bank Partner] on bank-linking screen.

  • CBN compliance badge: Regulated by CBNon welcome screen (footer).

  • Social proof: 12,000 Nigerians investing,500M+ invested on success screen.

  • Transparency: FAQ link: Why do we ask for BVN? explains regulatory requirement.

  • Writing about the project helped me better articulate design decisions beyond visuals.
